DEI Mission Statement

Mission

At MPEC, we strive to create and sustain a culture of inclusivity, acknowledge the lived experiences of all our members, and combat bigotry and prejudice in all its forms, including but not limited to discrimination based on ability, age, ethnicity, gender identity, nationality, race, religion, and sexual orientation. We also aim to conduct research that prioritizes community collaboration and mitigates disparities in well-being, access to healthcare, and health outcomes.

Beliefs

We recognize that racism and other types of identity-based discrimination come in many forms and manifest in both explicit actions and implicit biases of individuals, as well as within the fabric of our society and institutions. Discrimination, even when subtle or unintentional, is harmful to the people and groups who experience its impact. We also firmly believe that our research’s applicability, significance, and integrity depend on the centering of under-represented groups at every step in the research formulation, execution, and dissemination process.

Vision

In our vision, we strive to integrate the crucial and continuous commitments to diversity and inclusion in our strategy, culture, community, and the work we do.

Goals

  • Design and conduct research that reflects diverse cultural and geographical perspectives.
  • Critically examine and reform hiring and training practices regularly to ensure that they are true to our mission of actively recruiting and employing a diverse workforce.
  • Foster a culture of inclusivity by creating a working environment in which our employees can share their lived experiences without judgement or fear of retaliation.
  • Address determinants of bias and prejudice within our community and provide support to employees experiencing any form of discrimination.
  • Organize and facilitate MPEC-wide discussions and education platforms about discrimination and social issues that foster a more equitable, inclusive environment for underrepresented or marginalized members of our team and motivate further research efforts.
